Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel, a literary journal focusing on writers from the Appalachian mountains, has been a regular publication of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative since 1984. Its current issue, Volume 15, “The Mountains Have Come Closer,” honors the social and literary legacy of writer Jim Wayne Miller and his alter ego, “The Brier.” Co-editors Pauletta Hansel and Michael Henson and others published in this issue, including Karen George Susan Glassmeyer, Matthew Haughton, Charlie G. Hughes, Jay McCoy, Chrissie Anderson Peters, Rhonda Pettit, Dale Marie Prenatt and Roberta Schultz, will read their work on Friday, November 2 at Aquarius Star Om Café, 329 Ludlow Ave, Cincinnati at 8 pm. Matthew Haughton is the author of Stand in the Stillness of Woods (forthcoming, WordTech Editions). His chapbook, Bee-coursing Box (Accents Publications) was nominated for the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry Book of the Year.
Michael Henson is author of two books of fiction and three of poetry. His novella, Tommy Perdue, is due shortly from MotesBooks. He is co-editor of Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel.
Charlie G. Hughes is the co-editor of Groundwater: Contemporary Kentucky Fiction, editor of The Kentucky Literary Newsletter, a biweekly e-mail newsletter, and author ofBody and Blood (2010) and Shifting for Myself (2002), volumes of poems.
Jay McCoy draws inspiration for his writing from his vibrant family history. He co-founded the Teen Howl Poetry Series, a monthly youth open-mic series, and teaches creative writing at Lexington’s Carnegie Center.
Chrissie Anderson Peters is the author of the recently-published Dog Days and Dragonflies. She hails from the mountains of southern Appalachia and loves "digging up dead people".
Rhonda Pettit, author of “The Global Lovers”, teaches creative writing and literature at UC Blue Ash, and is editor of the Blue Ash Review.
Dale Marie Prenatt studied theatre in the mountains, has performed as a storyteller and writes poetry. Her work has been featured on the nationally syndicated "Snap Judgment" storytelling program on NPR."
Roberta Schultz is a principal songwriter for the Kentucky women’s trio, Raison D’Etre who have 8 recordings and one live concert DVD to their credit.
